cp might sound simple because its a very necessary thing for an OS to do, but there’s quite some technical depth to each of the core utils, if it were simple people would just be pumping out coreutil practice projects just like they do with “generic CRUD web app 5000”

I got a tower stand, the bottom of the tower had completely filled with dust and there was no airflow from there, the wheels are also very convenient for cleaning under there.

I also cleaned the dust inside and re-applied new thermal paste, neither of which I had done for quite a while, and it already improved my temps by a lot, about 20 celsius cooler max for both the cpu and gpu.

It’s a desktop on the floor under my desk, so there could definitely be some intake airflow problem there. It would be extremely impractical to bring it out, but maybe a human fan would help with that.

I’d just like to interject for a moment. What you’re refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX. Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called Linux, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project. There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called Linux distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux!

If there is any such thing as perfect software, I would say Git is probably it.

Mercurial seems cool but I don’t think there’s a real reason to move away from Git unless they come up with some groundbreaking new feature that no one has even imagined yet.

For use cases like that it’s usually better to search a pattern and split it to cursors. Also using line selects helps.

I remember being annoyed at what you said but I guess I was overusing C for new cursors when there were other ways to do what I needed because I don’t have that often now

I used to use Neovim but now I mainly use Helix, it’s really good by default, the most hassle is usually just looking up an LSP for a language and installing it.

My config file literally only has the theme I use, unlike the heavy configs I’d have to make so that vim/nvim are the way I want. I also like the multiple cursor approach it has to editing.

Depends what your threat model is, if you absolutely want no data about you whatsoever possibly leaving the device because it endangers you then Tails OS is probably the most private distro out there as others have mentioned, but it’s use case is specifically to be used for very private stuff and working through a live USB stick so that nothing remains on the device.

For the average person any distro is a huge improvement privacy wise over Windows, though Ubuntu does have ties to Amazon since it’s owned by Canonical, so if there’s any Linux distro you should avoid for privacy reasons it’s Ubuntu. It’s still incomparably private relative to Windows, but you have nothing to lose and a lot to gain by choosing other alternatives, Mint is just as easy and user friendly as Ubuntu without most of the bloat and Amazon crap.

How is it malicious compliance if it is a clearly eager effort to correctly implement some of the prerequisites to enforcing this law on Linux? Even if it were malicious compliance through intentionally not functional code, it’s open source and would probably be spotted as a bug soon enough.

It’s paving the wave to implement a Californian law that can very easily end up meaning ID verification for everything.

They could just not have done this at zero cost but decide to go to multiple projects, at this specific time which obviously isn’t coincidental, and actively work to start implementing this on Linux. I guess “Contributed to systemd” on their CV was more valuable than resisting the USA taking control of the whole internet and ending all sense of privacy.

Wow that’s an insane level of bootlicking, it was completely free for them to do absolutely nothing about this nonsense law and give the middle finger if asked by the US

I didn’t care before but it turns out the systemd haters were on to something for a long time, fuck these owners for even considering this and even locking the PR to avoid valid criticism, I hope all the contributors create a fork, jump ship and never let the previous owners commit a single line of code to it
