4·2 days agoFor serious, tho: people change. I don’t expect mega corporations to ever change for the better.
at the very best, they can, on occasion, do something thats accidentally good.
But that never really meaningfully alters the trajectory of evil.

Technology@lemmy.world•Microsoft has an ambitious plan to win users back, and go toe-to-toe with Valve's SteamOS for gaming — but I'm not getting my hopes upEnglish
12·2 days agoIf Microsoft wants to win users back, the only way to do that is by re-releasing Windows 7, and make a legal contract to never add spyware, monetization, adware, AI, service accounts to install/log in to the PC, or anything else to it.
Windows 7 was the peak of their capabilities. everything before that was building up to 7, everything after was a series of missteps and fuckups.
But thats never gonna happen.

482·17 days agobecause America keeps giving money to broadband companies, who promise to improve internet speeds and access… give the money to executives as bonuses, do shit all with speeds or access, and their reward is another dumptruck of money to expand access and speeds… Which they 20 return to 10 and give it all out as executive bonuses again and do fuck all for the customer/citizens
oh, and when municipalities try to run their own broadband, they force them to shut down because its not fair for them to compete with the monopolistic internet companies. 🙄

72·19 days agosocial media has been twisting itself to protect conservatives and right wing political terrorism since damn near the beginning.
Its where their bread and butter are. Right wing idiots following right wing demagogues spouting right wing bullshit are the ones that dont run adblockers, that click all the ads (Especially if its for merchandise for their chosen political team), and generate disproportionate amounts of money.

343·29 days agoStill, if this TV came out tomorrow and Wendell from Level1techs said “your Linux pc can get 4k, 120hz, HDR FreeSync out of this” and showed it working, $3500 dollars wouldn’t stop me from buying it.
I wish I was this rich to impulse buy something that expensive because a man on the internet said something positive abouti t.

1·29 days agoWhat you say is true but it’s off topic because that’s not the current situation. What we’re actually seeing right now is that parents literally do not want to take their devices away from their kids and they don’t want to supervise their kids. It really is that simple.
So saying its a parental responsibility is off topic, and what we should focus on is… parental responsibility.

1·29 days agoThe typical under-13 social media user is not a sneaky kid. It’s a family making a decision together.
Yep… Theres an idiot in my family that gave their grandkids unrestricted, flagship phones, with full social media account access, at 7 years old.
And no, they are not too old to understand technology. They perfectly understand technology, the internet, and everything else. They are just stupid.
Its on the grandparents for doing it. its on the parents for not taking the fuckin phones away. and its also on social media companies for being algorithmic predators.
