I think they are mostly doing this as a stealth layoff. It’s been a pretty popular strategy lately.
I enjoy how Amazon talks a big game about how great they are for the environment and their pledge to stop climate change, then they force workers to commute to the office who have been happily doing their jobs over the internet.
unless you only buy no-DRM and your own backups
Going to have to plug GOG here as these are both things they offer. I try to buy games there instead of Steam, purely for this reason.
Many expensive ones too. The iPhone 15 runs at USB 2.0 speeds, despite having USB-C.
I’m kinda confused on why this button is helpful. If you open the camera app on iOS, hitting either volume button will take a picture.
Or they could not be. Which seems like the more likely case given the current state of self-driving cars that cannot even safely drive down a pre-planned underground tunnel without a driver. (The Tesla tunnel)
Yep. And phone typing is the ‘hunt and peck’ method of keyboard typing. Which is unfortunate because it’s ingraining the slowest way to type onto a whole generation.
Any invaders in that tree line are likely having a very bad time continuing their invasionary goals.
You might be surprised at how many games just work on Linux. Have been running it on my laptop for a bit now and it hasn’t presented an issue. Check out https://www.protondb.com/.
Had a friend recently ask me to benchmark my PC as he was buying one and wanted a baseline number to compare against. Asked him what he wanted me to benchmark, (it was Mass Effect). The process was: install on steam, hit play on steam. The only annoying part was I had to wait for the new game cinematic to finish before I could get a FPS reading.
O&O Shutup10 is pretty nice though.
I’m currently using it on my HTPC and laptop with pretty good results on both. Going to switch over on my main machine in the near future as well, whenever my next format is, which will probably be when Win 10 goes EOL.
Main growing pains for me has been just re-learning stuff I previously knew. But, I’m really liking that I feel like I’m in charge of the OS again, the same way I felt back when Win 7 was a thing and the OS did its best to get out of your way.
Fuck yeah man! Glad to hear it is working well for you so far! <3
This problem seems like it was already solved using satellites.
The only real niche I see for this is during natural disasters, which could get a cell network back online in a limited capacity. But even then, it seems like it would be cheaper to just run some more diesel out to the cell towers’ backup generators.
The biggest thing is you have changed a random write to a linear write, something HDDs are significantly better at. The torrent is downloading little pieces from all over the place, requiring the HDD to move it’s head all over the place to write them. But when simply copying off the ssd, it keeps the head in roughly one place and just writes lineally, utilizing it’s maximum write speed.
I would say try it out, see if it helps.
Also, if the HDD is having to do other tasks at the same time, that will slow it down as the head can only ever be in one place.
Unfortunately, this problem is larger than a micro-code update. The main issue the user is likely referring to is Intel shipping defective product (oxidation issues), denying warranty claims for said defective product, then staying quiet when it’s proven they have been shipping defective product. Intel could have owned up to the issue and proactively recalled defective units, but, they didn’t do the honorable thing, not even close.
Then all oil companies
Survey says, Gazprom! https://lemmy.world/post/18220754
We don’t know and Intel is being incredibly mum about the entire situation.
AMD have anything to compete with Intel QSV
I believe AMD VCN does the same thing. Though I haven’t looked into it. AMD chips also have pretty decent onboard video cores, so you might be able to do hardware accelerated encoding that way too.
was looking at a newer Intel CPU
Just stay away from Intel 13th and 14th gen chips. They have oxidation issues from the factory and are also over-volting themselves. The former is unfixable and the latter causes unfixable damage.
It certainly doesn’t help Intel has been intentionally selling defective product in the 13th and 14th gen lines. People are quite reasonably going to AMD more and more.
Glad to see more carbon-free power on-lining!
