I took German in high school and cheated by inventing my own runic script. I would draw elaborate fantasy/sci-fi drawings on the covers of my notebooks with the German verb declensions and whatnot written all over monoliths or knight’s armor or dueling spaceships, using my own script instead of regular characters, and then have these notebook sitting on my desk while taking the tests. I dunno, I felt the most spied upon in my (programming) career when my team had a Slack channel going and everybody was expected to be available during working hours, even though I was WFH. When I actually worked in the main headquarters in downtown Philly, I would fuck off a lot and go shopping or take two hour lunches with beer and stuff like that. They even had a “sick room” on my floor with a very comfortable couch that I would take regular 45 minute naps on after lunch (until the fucking InfoSys contractors discovered it). Nobody ever said shit.

I was worried this was going to be a problem when I bought new Windows 11 laptops for my octogenerian parents to use. And even if that weren’t the case, databases are regularly backed up to tape drives or whatever - when people delete or munge all their comments, Reddit doesn’t go back into all the backups and make the same changes there. In fact, I would imagine that when they sell their shit to companies for AI training, they sell old pre-AI backups rather than a latest copy.

My experiences working for huge corporations have made it clear what an enormous percentage of corporate workers spend all their time on useless busy work, so in theory layoffs can make a corporation more profitable. The problem is that it’s rarely the useless ass-kissers who get laid off.
