  • My recommendation to many newcomers:

Setup Yunohost, which gives you a custom Debian-based OS that’s easy to deploy tested builds, like Rustdesk. You can configure your Domain info, DNS, etc pretty easily, and if you decide, a dynamic domain or Porkbun (cuz is cheap plus free private WHOIS and SSL certs).

Yes, a small learning curve, but easier than building from Docker when you know nothing about Docker nor have the time to learn. I can fumble through a UI, I can’t fumble with commands or code that I don’t instinctively know. Others who day “just take the time to learn Docker”… But I’ve got 2 jobs, kids and their activities, pets, and other hobbies, so not much time for other stuff.

  • Just like Musk with the charade of “it’s coming” and as long as you keep excitement and act like it’s a game changer, the idiot investors will keep throwing money at it, propping it up. They’ve gotta believe by now it’s both unsustainable and a shitty product, but are just milking it dry for the sake of profits.

  • Someone should do a write up for pihole vs adguard vs technitium vs eBlockerOS

https://eblocker.org/en/ (German product?) (BTW you’re all welcome that I showed you a new thing)

Edit May 7: eBlockerOS seems geared towards better packet* inspection, hidden trackers protection, and fingerprinting. You can install a HTTPS cert* on your current machine so it does MITM packet inspection where it can scan*, inspect, and reencrypt from the looks of it.

Im probably going to run this at work on my test environment to see how well it does overall. Maybe less granular control, but I like is more* than just an adblocker like pihole.

  • Keep dreaming! Chrome OS and Chromebooks in general are nearly as expensive as actual windows PCs with 5%the functionality. Just go straight up Linux at that point!! Free, open source, EASY to install or dual boot even. It is far better than anything Google would put out.

If you’ve never tried it, follow any one of the million guides for Ubuntu or Mint and you’ll be amazed. Even Steam OS, CachyOS, ZorinOS, or other gaming oriented systems.

I forget this isn’t the privacy thread, but you can’t just “hope” Google’s going to fix everything wrong with Windows when they’re doing the same exact thing as each other. You want to break free, you want functional, you want privacy, get Linux.

  • The other things politicians do, like in Illinois, is introduce one bill, and his other things within it to get things passed outside the normal channels. Like when Pritzker up and banned 170+specific firearms, ammo limitations, threaded barrels, and then started a registration process. Also repealed knowingly spreading HIV illegal, so anyone (by the sound of it-haven’t looked into it much) can sleep with a new partner without disclosing HIV status. I’m assuming that’s to appeal somehow to the LGBTQ community since the bulk of voters are the Chicago area, but some time he purely for just in time for elections.

You might think the firearms thing is OK as it helps cut down on crime. Nope, instead, there’s cashless bail and softer policies towards criminals. We can’t even accurately report those numbers based on how crimes or incidents are categorized. It’s a mess.

He also just made it so that a bulk of the DOT funds go to Chicago roads with little left over for the remainder of the state… The tolls collected by the Chicago area are supposed to help that, but nooo, just keep reallocating funds around election time. Sure.
