How are you planning on getting into piracy/how do you have everything set up right now?

For a company whose main product is developing and supporting linux the ipo is the first step to being bought.
What does this mean? The same thing that it meant for other linux companies, except the brand is not worth preserving because it’s toxic.
What effect will this have on other distros? See red hat.
I have many SBCs and have run linux on lots of platforms. I have jellyfin and a decently big server.
I also have the appletv 4k and the best option at the moment is absolutely to pay for the lifetime version of some player like infuse ($100) that can seamlessly work with your jellyfin and play everything.
Everything except for some set top box type device is a hacky mess and the only set top box worth a crap in my price range was the atv4k. I could build a pc and plug it up but what remote will I use? Will people understand how to use it? The pc will also need specific video cards that cost as much as an atv4k + infuse lifetime setup alone.
I could pick some sbc or other set top box but they all have weird rpi like limitations “only h265” you’re gonna have your guests or whoever know to pick the scene releases out of sonarr that are exactly that encoding?
Just pay for infuse and avoid all the wasted time, money and frustration.
E: before I paid for infuse, I got curious and looked up why the dev is charging so much. It’s the licensing cost for officially supporting Dolby et al.
The difference is that some things work on one and some things don’t work on the other.
For example: the literal whole way you’ve ever been able to use a computer will only work on x11. That’s because x11 comes directly from the lineage of human computer interface that you’re used to. Everything just works. Unless…
Counter example: new stuff is phasing out (or has already phased out) x11 support! Kde and gnome for example, are Wayland only in the most recent builds. That doesn’t mean your rich copying and accessibility tools still work. They just didn’t implement those parts.
If you believe that open source is an impenetrable monolith that cannot be changed then you’d better get on the Wayland ship now and figure out how to deal with its shortcomings before you’re left behind.
If you believe that open source projects can respond to their users and improve, stick with x11. It works and someone will support it.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Either Linux's built-in display drivers are black magic or microslop is incompetent

Usually weird display stuff is in there.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Arch Linux's AUR Sees More Than 400 Packages Compromised With Malware
41·9 days agoDang, if only their packages were more up to date maybe this wouldn’t have happened.
You’re gonna have better luck changing your habits than you will making a block that you yourself can’t overcome.
You’ll be fine, just do it
Replace your thermal paste with ptm or some other ptm like.
The paste becomes crap over time.
It may be worth your time to use a ptm alike and new thermal pads on your 7600 as well, or pay a shop to do that.
Check that air is actually getting to your components. It’s easy for fan screens to get plugged up and for some reason people used to not put enough fans in their cases.
Those msi b450 motherboards have annoying bioses so check if there some ridiculous fan curve mess turned on or misconfigured.
I call else fails, noc-tua, blow on that thing.
You can use smartctl or some gui wrapper for it to do the wd app stuff (warning, this will not work and you will have to learn how your specific drive misreports smart data!).
You’ll figure out how to print and scan in linux eventually if your printer is supported. It’s probably supported.
What do you use the hp printer app for? What do you use the wd drive app for?
All the rest of the shit you asked you’re just gonna have to figure out for yourself. The answers are all yes but you’re gonna have to learn how it’s different.
I am speaking from decades of experience when I say the following:
No one can help you with this particular problem in any serious way if you don’t post your cpu and gpu models.
If you are on a laptop or some brand of desktop you need to post the model for that too.
Unfortunately, no.
Due to the year of the linux desktop, new user applications have been closed. The overwhelming positive response has just completely bypassed the available seats.
I’m sorry, but we’re full.

Linux@lemmy.ml•How can I make these numbers on KCalc bigger?
61·21 days agoEverybody is saying “raise them to a power” or “add to them”.
No one realizes you can just push “c” twice and type different numbers that are as big as you like!

3·25 days agoI use low memory vps systems from lists maintained by the lowendbox website but these are even smaller! What providers do you use that accommodate such tiny systems? I never really run up against the 1/2 to 1gb barrier on sub $10/y vpses so maybe I could switch to your providers and save some cash!

Linux@lemmy.ml•TIL: It is 2026 and you still can not run Snaps in strict mode on Debian-based systems
27·1 month agoIt’s not a big deal because the answer to the problem is “don’t run snaps”.
Debian and install the “unattended-upgrades” package.
You set it up with an email address to complain to when something fucks up and it just works.
E: no matter what you end up going with, some kind of reverse proxy or vpn will be helpful for when you need to remote in and fix something.
If you end up needing Remote Desktop and can do it, stay away from Wayland. The screen sharing situation there is confusing and annoying for seasoned users, let alone in a tech support situation.
What might be a better bet is either a windows (robust screen sharing setup) or mac (simpler interface and reliability) computer. You’re gonna be on the other end of it, so make sure to pick what you know the most deeply when it comes to remote support.
E2: another note in the vein of hated non linux oses: Those might be good because other people in the users life may be familiar with them and it won’t be such a pain when they wanna open a file or something.
