Just went down the rabbit-hole of the acquisition of MySQL as I was bored. What a fascinating story.

Dude who originally made it in 1995, Michael Widenius, named it after his daughter My, hence MySQL. He sold it to Sun for $1 billion in 2008. He then turned around, forked the software, and produced MariaDB (I always wondered why it was named that) starting a new organization around it in 2009. It’s functionally nearly identical, often able to be used as a drop in replacement, assuming you aren’t using new features developed after the fork. Last month, he sold it again, the same fucking base software, to some private equity firm (yay…). What a guy.

Unfortunately, he’s run out of daughters to name software after and already used his son’s name for something else, so we might be at the end of open-source, community-driven DB solutions from Michael. To be fair, relying on any projects from him to be free and open indefinitely is apparently not a good idea anyway.

It depends on your state. There’s a handful that passed laws requiring porn sites to verify age via ID. Several sites have just outright banned them based on IP as they don’t want to deal with the privacy nightmare.

I can’t speak for that device in particular, but I’ve been using a Galaxy Fold for a few years now and the crease is literally nothing. In most cases, you’re looking dead on at the phone and you can’t see it. If you’re outside it becomes slightly more noticeable, but the bright glare from the sun in general makes for more of a problem than the crease. I have no intention of going back to a non-folding device.

Also, Huawei is not banned from being purchased and used by consumers in the US lmao.

For Android:

• Open Settings
• Search for “Lockdown”
• Select “Show Lockdown option” from the results, or the result that most resembles that.
• Enter your pin if required.
• Tap the associated slider to enable Show lockdown option

Now when you hold your power button, you get a “lockdown” option that disables biometrics and forces you to enter your passcode for the next unlock.

Particularly useful for me, as I have my phone set up to always be unlocked if my watch is close enough (maybe stupid of me), but I can force lock it at any time.

AI have no concepts, period. It doesn’t know what a person is, or what the laws are. It generates word salad that approximates human statements.

This isn’t quite accurate. LLMs semantically group words and have a sort of internal model of concepts and how different words relate to them. It’s still not that of a human and certainly does not “understand” what it’s saying.

I get that everyone’s on the “shit on AI train”, and it’s rightfully deserved in many ways, but you’re grossly oversimplifying. That said, way too many people do give LLMs too much credit and think it’s effectively magic. Reality, as is usually the case, is somewhere in the middle.

False. They’ll track whether you have an account or not. Even NoScript won’t completely disable their tracking. If you use the web, Meta is watching you.
