My front facing camera on my iPad stopped working. My device is pristine, has always been in a case, has zero cracks, and has never been dropped. I brought it in to an apple store and they said they could fix it for half the price of a new one. Fuck 'em. I’d rather just do it myself. It was out of warranty by a few months maybe. I don’t remember. The front camera isn’t worth half the price of a new device.

Would you recommend it?

Yeah. I suppose. It would have been better from a security/privacy standpoint for it to be an opt-in vs an opt-out.

The thing is… All the premium features USED TO BE FREE AND AVAILABLE UNTIL THEY LOCKED THEM BEHIND A PAY WALL.

I used to be able to have YouTube playing in the background, reduced ads, etc. All of the features.

Now, I still do because I use Firefox + ublock on mobile. Yeah, I can play this shit with my screen off (Firefox + unlock + desktop mode + turn screen off).

Was anyone really stealing? The ads were served, right? The checks for the ads were paid.

Voice data doesn’t have to mean live microphone. Voice data could be when you use Siri or Google and talk to your phone to search things.

It is worth noting that most phones, whether Android or iOS, now notify users when a service accesses the microphone. On Android, a green light appears in the upper right, while on iPhone, it’s an orange light.
